4 Steps to a Cleaner Garage Door

Cleaner Garage DoorAt Carroll Garage Doors, we know what a great thing a fully functional garage door can be. The garage door is one of the first things that a person sees when they look at your home. In addition to having it in great condition, you also want to keep it clean. Not only is this pleasing to the eye, but it also helps to keep your door functioning better for longer. Here are four easy steps to a cleaner and better functioning garage door.

1. Gather Materials

The first step in any project is to gather all of the necessary materials in one convenient location. You will need:

  • Gloves
  • Eye protection
  • Brush or rag
  • Dish soap
  • Window cleaner
  • Bleach (optional)
  • Hose
  • Bucket
  • Lubricant

Wearing the gloves should protect your hands if you plan on using bleach. The eye protection will keep water and other items from spraying into your eyes. Call us or check your owner’s manual to make sure you are using a suitable brush or rag for your particular door. You will also want to make sure your dish soap and bleach will not damage the coating on your door, inside or out.

2. Wash Down Door & Windows

Most garage doors get dirty from the usual dust and mud. This often makes for a fairly simple cleanup process, especially if you are in the habit of washing your garage door regularly. Use the hose to spray down your door thoroughly and get as much loose debris off as possible. Next, take your rag or brush and scrub at some of the stickier areas that didn’t come off with the hose spray. If you have any oil stains or other stubborn areas, scrub it with a mix of bleach and water. Do not mix the bleach with any other chemicals or cleaners. Clean the inside of the door the same way you cleaned the outside. Don’t forget about the windows.

3. Dust Tracks

Just as your garage door gets dirty, the tracks that it glides on can also get dirty. When you clean the outside and inside of the door, remember to also take a rag and get all of the dust off of the tracks. This will allow your door to slide better and keeps grime and dirt from building up.

4. Lubricate as Needed

Every once in a while, the metal parts of your garage door system should be lubricated. Inspect your whole system to make sure everything is as it should be. If needed, call in one of our technicians for servicing. Keeping your garage door clean will help your whole system to function better.
